Washington, DC Drupalers

This group is for everyone living in the DC metro area who's interested in Drupal. You can post here about anything relating to DC and Drupal, whether that's local job postings, events, or just a call out to talk shop over beers.

We have a great meetup every month where we get together to connect in person. The target audience is Drupal developers, users, and people who want to learn more about Drupal. We start the meetups with a round of very focused lightening talks that discuss real world solutions to existing problems, new work people have done, and Drupal news. Some of these talks are about code, and some are not. We do ask that all presenters talk on a level that everyone - including non-developers - can follow. After the talks, we chat over beer, and usually play at least a few games of foosball.

We're open to ways to improve the meetups and this group, so speak up if you have ideas!

Accordion Blocks module released for Drupal

private
prajwala - Tue, 2009-06-16 10:10

Folks, we're happy to roll out yet another module for Drupal. It's called “Accordion Blocks”. As the name says, this module provides an accordion effect to all your blocks. You can also apply jQuery UI themes through the configuration settings of the module.

This block is for those of you who deploy apps with a lot of blocks on either side bars, and are looking for newer usability enhancements with regards to visibility of the blocks. It not only minimizes all blocks on a Drupal page, but provides a cool accordion effect to help your user to concentrate on a single block at a time.

2009-06-08 19:00 - 21:00 America/New_York

Get your 3D glasses ready... We'll be meeting in 3D (yes, I mean in person) next Monday, June 8th at Stetson's. We'll meet at the upstairs bar around 7:00 pm, and will get started with introductions followed by a round of five minute lightening presentations at 7:30 pm.

So far, a few people have volunteered to lead lightning talks.

  • Adrian Rossouw, in town from South Africa, will talk about Aegir, a set of modules that helps you easily deploy and maintain many Drupal sites. He'll talk about what you can do with Aegir, where the project is, and where it's going.

The floor is open for anyone to give a five minute lightening talk, so if you'd like to talk about something you're working on in Drupal - like a module, a new website/tool, a question you have, etc. - post your topic in the comments and come ready to talk.

DC Drupal meetups are for people of all skills/knowledge levels, and all levels of presentations are welcome. Don't be shy if you're just starting or thinking about starting with Drupal - the meetups are a great way to learn and meet people who've been in your shoes before.

More details on the venue are below. See you there!

Hi folks,

The first DC CiviCRM Meetup this past Wednesday had a great showing. We had over 25 people who came out to talk about the system, where it is going, and how various organizations are implementing the CRM.

We discussed the need for both training and networking sessions, and have decided to hold two Meetups each month. In two weeks, on May 6th at 6:30pm, we will hold an "Introduction to CiviCRM" session. We are still looking for a location to hold this session, so please send me any recommendations on conference rooms we can use that can seat about 30 people.

Drupal Site Building Security Training

What's the interest level in a Drupal security training session? I'm thinking of this as a practical session focused on building a secure Drupal site using selected modules and configurations. The format would probably be a day long training session, depending on the level of detail people want to get into. Most of the information we'd be teaching would be focused on real world security issues and how to solve or prevent them using existing tools of the trade.

Are you ready for a MADCamp?

Alex UA's picture
public
Alex UA - Mon, 2009-03-30 17:26

In the months since we successfully pulled off the first Philly Area DrupalCamp (PADCamp) we have had some discussions (most recently at DrupalCon) about whether we should focus on throwing another PADCamp, or whether we should try to work with our neighbors to the North and South of Philly to create a Mid-Atlantic DrupalCamp (MADCamp). I don't have the specific numbers, but at the PADCamp there were tons of people from New York City, Washington DC, Harrisburg, and lots of places in between, so to some degree it was already a MADCamp. What I'd like to try to see for this Camp is a little more regional cooperation and outreach, so I'm curious to know whether anyone from the DC, Maryland, Central PA, NJ, or NYC groups would be interested in helping to make this a reality.

I am proposing that we have the first MADCamp in Philly, due to it's central location on the East Coast and the fact that the Philly group is trying to move the idea forward. However, I'm personally open to hearing ideas for hosting it in other cities, and one of the bigger goals I would have for the Camp is to get more regional cooperation and coordination amongst the groups. I attend NYC DrupalCamps and DC BarCamps (don't think there's been a DC DrupalCamp- has there?), and I've seen many of the same faces at many of these events.

So, if we're going to move forward with this idea, here are some things that need to be decided:

DrupalCon DC has come and gone, and most of the 1,400 Drupalers that it brought to Washington, DC have gone home. That's more of a reason for the Drupal developers, the users, and the curious that call DC home to get together and pick up where DrupalCon left off. The next DC Drupal meetup will be on Monday, April 6, at 7:00 pm upstairs at Stetson's. Please join us to talk Drupal over beers. People of all skill/experience levels are welcome.

This month we'll take a slightly different approach to the meetup and will have 5 minute lightening round demos starting at 7:30 pm. We'll break into small groups and do this round robin style, with simultaneous presentations, rotations every five minutes, and a lot of huddling around laptops. Here's a teaser on what you'll see at the meetup:

  • Features module, which writes your modules for you and lets you build sites faster - Jeff from Development Seed
  • OpenPublish, a packaged distribution of Drupal that's tailored to online publishers - Frank from Phase2 Technology
  • New module that mirrors Democracy in Action forms on Drupal sites via webform - Chris from EchoDitto
  • Interface module, dragging and dropping components utilizing the existing Drupal theming layer - Riche from Trellon

There's at least one presentation slot left, so if you'd like to show off what you've been working on please post about it in the comments and come ready to present. We also have some DrupalCon DC swag left over that we'll bring and put out for the taking.

We'll meet at the upstairs bar at Stetson's at 7:00 pm. More details on the venue are below. See you Monday!

File Management

Zahor@drupal.org - Mon, 2009-03-23 12:42

From my experience, there are a few major things lacking in Drupal. One of them that I have encountered a lot is the ability - or inability to manage files/documents effectively. I'd like to start laying the groundwork for a comprehensive file (or at least document) manager that allows some of the more popular feature requests e.g check in/check out, protected files & directories etc.
