Jamaican Library Group wants training in Drupal

Greetings Drupal users,

I attended a Library technology Conference in Canada over 2 days. The conference is dubbed “Access” 2009 conference – a library technology conference focused on access issues and the technologies that provide access to information. From that conference, I realized that there are so many Canadian libraries using Drupal and doing really cool stuff with it.

I happen to be the chair of the Library and Information Association of Jamaica. We want to update our Website: http://www.liaja.org.jm/ using Drupal.

Automated Readers Advisory - Taxonomy or Node Reference

I was wondering if anyone had any experience building something for automating readers advisory. My librarians are calling it "read-a-likes." The idea is that there is a list of authors. Each author would link to their page with links to other similar authors. You can see the example below.

If you like David Baldacci, then try:

William Bernhardt
Stephen J. Cannell
Linda Fairstein
Vince Flynn
James Grippando
John Grisham
Brad Meltzer
Kyle Mills
Robert Tanenbaum
Stuart Woods (Will Lee Series)

A further example can be found here.

The best module to allow file uploads to have metadata?

Hello all. My apologies if this question belongs in a more entry-level group (let me know if you recommend one.)

The question: The site I'm building will need to have a strong ability to present files for download by users. The out-of-the-box drupal has the Uploads module, which allows us to place files onto the site. However, there is no functionality for the uploader to include metadata for the file like name, author, date, keywords, etc.

-- What is the most established/respected/good module that will allow uploads to have metadata?

Library API

After spending hours with Taxonomy trying to use it to construct a single tiered Library, The problem was that the module of taxonomy was too specific to what it does. I also saw that with in my code, I was running multiple select statements that were unnecessary. In addition my library was small, and I feared using a growing database full of taxonomy data would hinder the performance of my script. Simply put, Taxonomy was to high level for what I needed, and didn't provide the low level functionality and flexibility that I wanted.

I needed to write my own library routine, and modifying taxonomy was not an option. I wasn't using this to classify content, but as a simple place holder for strings. I then went off to write taxonomy 2.0, but found the task was too large on its own to complete in a reasonable time.

Social Networking Unified Access Library. A new and better approach?

I submitted this within the forums, but I don't think it will get the attention it desires... I think this is an important step in development in Drupals Social Networking... Take a look and see if it is something that will draw the attention and the enthusiasm that it deserves. If it is deemed usable, then I will start working on an API.
