Establishment of Drupal Malaysia Association

najibx's picture

As one of the initiative to spur the Drupal knowledge sharing and promotion in Malaysia, it was proposed that we have an association that specifically cater for Drupal CMS. This issue was discusses in our gathering recently http://groups.drupal.org/node/7708.

It has been difficult for Drupal to grow and accepted in Malaysia for the past years.

The following comments were raised :

  1. Why do we need an association, just on online community is enough.
  2. There are other associations, such as Malaysia Open Source, why not work under them.
  3. Association shall not be money driven.
  4. There's already http://association.drupal.org. Why create another one.
  5. What's the benefit to me

I open the discussion to all ... we shall soon have another gathering to specifically discuss this.

Some may argue that an association has nothing to do with open source movement, or Drupal specifically. An open source is driven by free movement with no string attached, not like an association. However, majority of Malaysian drupalist are just adopters, not contributors to the drupal software. We just want to apply drupal as fast as we can. With drupal friends around it will certainly help. With an association we can make more friends, nearby drupalist, local drupalist. Or drupalgeeks and drupalchics, if you want.

It is about local support. Even if we have a Malaysian open source association, we can always go straight to the origin such as drupal.org and its global association. However, our friends here may want to champion drupal to their bosses. Some may find drupal a greener field and want to make a living with it. Yes, it is allowed. They need support. How about people who already paid money for drupal? They also need support and a sense of money well spent.

At this moment it is still harder to convince fellow malaysians to use drupal because we are small locally. It is easier to grow if we have an association. It will make us look bigger and more organized even if it starts with 10 people. The need of an association is now while we are still small. After we make it big the agenda may change.

Good arguments

Thanks, now I sort of understand why we need an association.

The above domain has been registered (allow several days to be activated). Our main focus now is setting up a platform so we can have a collaborative translation process, so everyone has a change to contribute. There are a lot to be translated. Thanks to Chelah who has started with some translation to Malay (27.99%) being translated. Please be familiarize your self with the following modules :

  1. Local Core
  2. Internationalization
  3. Localization client
  4. Localization server

More info, http://drupal.org/project/modules/category/97

Other than that, I am open to suggestion how we shall "develop" or "polish" the website. It shall belongs to the association once we settle down with that.

Cheers.

Drupal.my is now online. hmm ... nothing much there, though.
Hope to work on things once we have our first meeting to discuss about this.

Thanks Khalemi for the offer, we might consider it which we will discuss later. For the time being it it hosted under my shared hosting account. No harm.

So, go on and create your account. Think of something how we can improve it for benefit of all.

Cheers

Keep it up

najibx, so far you are the most energetic person in this group. Keep it up.

It is important to make drupal.my different from drupal.org. There must be something in drupal.my that cannot be found in drupal.org. Localization is one of it. I would like to suggest a catalog of Malaysian websites that use drupal. We don't need a 'how-to' forum since we can get it from drupal.org. Maybe a collection of Malaysian style themes and graphics. And perhaps a list of Malaysian PHP programmers and web designers.

version?

Hi all,

We (Hostwaves.com) would like to offer web hosting for free for drupal.my. Hostwaves have been helping out Drupal Association for quite sometimes. Please visit http://drupal.org/hosting

Should we run ads on the site? or marketing affiliates? or should the site run like a portal like joomla malaysia? forum ?

It would be great if we could gather every drupal malaysian user to drupal.my

Don't know where to file the 'bug report'. Unable to register at drupal.my. Click register, key-in username, email. Check email, got link, click the link, got a page saying this is temporary login (sort of ...), click the login button, got access denied page. Request new password and the cycle repeat.
