Creating content view in panels
Is there a way to create a list of content with multiple content types or by excluding a content type?
Usability: Add ability to sort Groups Directory by number of subscribers
I would like to be able to sort the Groups Directory by number of subscribers, so that I can easily view a list of the most active/popular groups. Can anyone to make this happen?
Thanks,

Pre-freeze code sprint in Los Angeles
chx (Károly Négyesi) is coming to Los Angeles and he's asking the L.A. developers to bring it for what will be one of the final pre-d7 code freeze coding and testing sprints. There will be chocolate, and at some point beer.
This will be a working code sprint. If you have experience coding modules and/or writing simpletests, that would be very helpful. If not, someone will assist you in getting up to speed. There will be tasks for anyone who wants to work.

Meetup.com disagreement leads to stranding of all mysql user groups
MySQL has long recommended that their local user groups organize using meetup.com. They even went so far as to underwrite all subscription costs for their group organizers (noone knows the details of this arrangement). Now that underwriting has dried up and local groups are stranded on a for-pay service. See http://www.pythian.com/news/2338/meetupcom-confirms-automatic-mysql-spon....
One more reason to hug groups.drupal.org and the editorial and infrastructure team that keeps it going.
Transcript of the 2hr ChatUp for the Local User Group Organizers meeting
We had a great turn out for our 1st ever ChatUp. We discussed many different ways to improve our groups. We also spent a great deal of time discussing how the GDO site could improve to serve local groups better. It appeared to be unanimous that we all believe that GDO should be the primary focus for group activity. We hope that GDO on D6 will be a step forward for those of us who continue to use it heavily in promoting local groups.
If you missed the meeting, feel free to reply to this post and comment on the transcript.
The transcript is attached.
Local Groups and GDO Communication
We're in the middle of our 1st ChatUp in #drupal-groups as announced on http://groups.drupal.org/local-user-group-organizers
One thing that has come up is the need for very effective communication tools that are particularly useful to local groups.
To that end I am asking:
What is the D6 GDO outlook regarding this topic
What do the group leaders believe us essential to any communication tool?
Many people have a meetup.com account and/or use a personal website for the group where better communication tools exist.
New static pages for GDO on D6
Per Moshe in post http://groups.drupal.org/node/20725#comment-75055 "I think some static FAQ pages and such are perfectly reasonable and much needed. I don't think anyone is married to the current homepage for that matter. Please do forge ahead."
And with that the topic is raised.
What benefit can we gain from having front-page links to static content on GDO? Currently all we have is a "about this site" link at the bottom of every page. Beyond that, all pages are reached only if you enter through a group or a search result.
Make it easier to find geographical groups
There are so many geographical groups now that it's difficult to find out if there's a group for an area you're interested in. I suggest:
- splitting up the category geographical into subcategories for continents and countries
- show the group category on the main group page (because mistakes happen, and it's easier to catch them if a group's current category is visible to the people using the group)
Let's get together in #drupal-groups and chat!
Hey "Local Users Group Organizers" gang! (and a few, select, cross posted groups)
If Spring is a season of rejuvenation in your part of the planet, then I hope yours is going better than it is here in Indiana. As the rains come and the grey clouds loom, I look forward to seeing the sun again AND to making efforts to grow the Local Drupal Users Group in my city.
Maintence: Private Content on Groups.Drupal.org Will be Unpublished
Hello World,
As you may have noticed, Groups.Drupal.org is being upgraded to Drupal 6. In that process we are adding fun new features and re-evaluating decisions from the past.
After careful consideration we have decided to remove the ability to post private content to the site. As a result, we will be unpublishing all existing private content. We manually reviewed existing private content and it was either posts that could be public or which could find a new home outside of groups.drupal.org.
Help test the groups.drupal.org upgrade to D6
Finally, I have publically posted a version of this site running on Drupal6. Some basics:
- Site: http://groupsbeta.drupal.org
- HTTP Auth: user=drupal, pass=drupal (protects site from search crawlers)
- Drupal login: Use your regular groups.drupal.org credentials.
- Bug reports - Please search for dupes and if none, create an issue.
- Feature requests - please don't file any now. We are focused on the upgrade.
Some notes:
- Email has been disabled.
- We are using a copy of groups.drupal.org DB. Feel free to mangle the content. I do testing in the Sandbox group out of habit.
- All private content has been unpublished. We are not offerring private content on D6. We will soon post on front page about this and email all authors of private posts. You will have a chance to download your content or make it public. More info soon.
- The job listing page will come back soon. I do hope this feature moves off of groups.drupal.org during the redesign.
- We are using Solr powered search, and can facet by group, among other things. Thanks and respect to the apachesolr devs.
- Panels powered group pages are gone for now. We need to finish this patch. Help wanted.
Canned Responses to Group Proposals
Reasons for denying the applicant a new group on g.d.o:
Group is denied (duplicate group)
Your Group seems to overlaps an existing group, ______, and thus has not been approved. If you'd like to re-define your group or change it so that it does not seem to overlap...
Please improve the title and/or mission statement of your new group
Group Approval Policies
We have some guidelines about groups:
- All groups are subject to approval by moderators. Please be patient.
- Most group submissions are rejected because they don't follow these guidelines.
- Group names should be brief, humble, and avoid the used of the word Drupal. Some examples
- Good: Installation. San Francisco
- Bad: Installation group. San Francisco League of Drupal fans
- Don't overlap much with an existing group. We want fewer big groups given a choice. Groups can split apart organically if they have enough members.
Group Submission / Moderation Improvements
I'd like to get some feedback about how to improve the groups submission and moderation process.
Based on some initial discussion with some of the key folks who actually moderate groups, here are the major tasks:
- Improve the guidelines for adding groups - these are currently visible at http://groups.drupal.org/node/add/og I think they are actually quite good, aside from some small tweaks. I've started a wiki to hold the Group Submission Guidelines (please help refine them.
Presenter pool
There is an interesting write-up about remote presentations on the Open Media g.d.o. made by Kevin (kreynen@drupal.org). From their experiences it seems like it should be feasible to make a habit out of remote Drupal presentations.
The Jobs Page. Did something change or is it me (and by browser?)
Hi Everyone,
Till about a week ago, i could look at the jobs page here, and there was a nice table, with location, title, Part-Time or Full-Time, telecommute or not.
Now, i am redirected to google feed reader or some such. Different depending on the machine i'm on.
Is the old page gone for good. I miss that interface. It was more useful.
thx,
m

Review of Drupal Multimedia by Aaron Winborn, Packt Publishing
Drupal is a powerful tool for building amazingly scalable websites quickly and simply. The use of multimedia in Drupal has posed challenges to many users and developers of all abilities. Drupal Multimedia addresses the main questions regarding how to implement video, image, and audio content in a way that is elegant for the developer, as well as the end user. The language of the book is straight to the point, and provides a framework to practice building an assortment of multimedia sites using a variety of modules in the context of test or example sites.
Template for job posting takedown notices
A member of the community recently posted a job posting that didn't follow the job posting guidelines (the job wasn't Drupal-specific) and it was quickly unpublished. I sent the member a message through his contact form and have copied it below. Please consider using this as a template when removing inappropriately-posted job listings.
I didn't make this wiki page Full HTML so that it can be improved by the larger community.
Details about nice "subscription" interface below each post
I really liked the way UI is designed here on GDO for nice subscription interface. Could you please provide the details how you achieved this? I can see the simple html markup (which is elegant) but I am sure there some jquery or javscript magic. Already looked at about page and it doesn't say. So would love to know more or learn from the script if you can please share.
On a slightly differnt note, this may be a nice alternative to many "create x, create y" links on the group details block on the right.
How many GDO subscribers?
I've read the footer on this site many times and always assumed that the # of subscriptions meant the number of registered users on this site. But today when I read it more closely, I realized that "54583 group subscriptions" could actually mean something very different.
If I am subscribed to 34 groups, do I count as 1 or as 34 in "54583 group subscriptions"?
How many registered users on this site? What is the average number of subscriptions per user?
Thanks,
Erik
Drupal.org Redesign Prototype: Iteration 11
Hi,
This week sees the release of iteration 11.
http://drupal.markboultondesign.com/iteration11
This week we have made lots of some smaller changes throughout the whole prototype, items that were delayed from iteration 10. For this release, we've paid particular attention to several pages:
-
Marketplace
-
Download and Extend
-
Modules landing page
-
Themes landing page
-
Search_by theme
-
Home page
-
Dashboard
There has been a lot of great feedback on the iteration 10 post, thank you all for your valuable input.
Drupal.org Redesign Prototype: Iteration 10
Hi,
This week sees the release of iteration 10 in the Drupal redesign prototype.
http://drupal.markboultondesign.com/iteration10
We're currently working with the Drupal Association to further define an advertising strategy for the redesigned d.o. Therefore, we've included a few more ads, but it probably isn't indicative of the final strategy.
Signup module supports CCK date fields and is now available for Drupal 6
After a successful fundraising effort and a lot of hard work, I'm pleased to announce that the Signup module has made some major leaps forward in the recent past:
- Supports CCK date fields for reminder emails and auto-close functionality (#86462). You can have both event and date enabled on the same site. For CCK date node types, you select which date field you want to use for signup functionality when configuring the node type.
- Ported to Drupal 6, Views2, etc. The 6.x-1.0-rc1 release candidate is now out.
There are a ton of other improvements too numerous to list here. For details, check out the 5.x-2.6 and 5.x-2.5 release notes.
Groups D6 ?
Has anybody install groups in d6 Yet and if so what modules are installed.
Group manager group
Would it be possible to create a g.d.o group for group managers. It should probably be limited to managers and g.d.o admins, and it could address both management and technical issues.
Kinesis Keyboard thanks
I want to thank the fellow who sat behind me at the LA Drupalcamp a few months ago. I bought the Kinesis keyboard you told me about on the spot. Cost more than most people are wiling to pay, a little hard to get used to at first, (and probably designed for someone with slightly larger hands than mine), but WOOHOO! I've had significantly less wrist pain since I adopted this thing.I don't remember your name (feel free to pipe up here), but I'm very grateful.
Performance benefits from empowerment and extensive training
http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/bsc/peps/2008/00000061/00000003/ar...
I saw this article referenced in the economist. Groups.drupal.org has done wonders for the community by empowering local and working groups and giving them control over their groups. What we seem to be missing is training. Does it make sense to provide training for group organizers and event managers?
Discuss.
Policy on crediting sponsors?
I'm wondering if there's any official policy regarding crediting sponsors on G.D.O. - Could an individual credit sponsors in such a way as is displayed here?. Obviously there would have to be some guidelines if such a thing were allowed.
Yet another post from me...
Apologies for all the recent posts to this group. Hope I'm not spamming people. I had some other questions/ideas that I wanted to ask
1) Local Ambassadors Page (http://groups.drupal.org/local-ambassadors) - I was looking through this and wondered how is this sorted/organized? Currently it seems almost random. I had hoped it might make some of the "key players" more evident, but the people I consider influential in certain areas don't really seem to be evident on that list. Some thoughts I had were:
- Giving weight to people who organize multiple events
G.D.O Email System
Two issues I wanted to bring up.
1) When using the events feature and signups, it mentions that that when people signup for the event that they will be sent a reminder email 24hrs before the event. However, this never seems to happen. I have started sending out manual reminders for some of the events I've posted. I'm not sure if this is a known issue or not. If this feature isn't enabled, then the UI should be updated accordingly (i could imagine it might be load intensive) and if it is, then it seems to be a bug or something.
Where do the jobs go?
I keep seeing jobs posted all over the place. Even this group. Unless someone is hiring to work on g.d.o, I think that's off topic. People seem to cross post jobs anywhere that seems even remotely connected and some just seem random. Is there some group for posting jobs? If I clean a job posting out of a group, where do I put it? Are there any rules on this?

Featured Content per Group (Sticky per group)
I'm not sure how many other people might have this problem, but I was wondering if there was some way to make a post sticky for just a particular group?
Use case: I am organizing a regional event that I would like to cross post to other nearby groups who may be interested, and make featured/sticky on the local groups homepage. However, if the post is marked sticky then it becomes sticky for all groups and seems rude, at the very least, if not abuse to impose the importance of one group on the other groups.

Friendlier rejections for new groups
The process for moderating groups, leaves a lot to be desired. Excited new users are getting cryptic messages, without much recourse. We can do better.
Here's a typical explanation: "Note:this does not meet the group guidelines" and then points to http://groups.drupal.org/node/add/og
This process needs a friendly a welcoming touch. How about some fun quotes. I've recently been using

Encargado | Busco especialista en Drupal y organic group
Hola,
Drupal Developer/Themer | Cheng & Tsui Company
Cheng & Tsui Company, a Boston-based textbook publisher looking for a developer/themer to migrate our storefront/catalog site from Drupal e-Commerce to Ubercart. I've already setup a development site and imported the product nodes into Ubercart - but now needs a lot of theme work and some development for new features.
Project Outline
Update Los Angeles group manager
Hi folks. If you're not a group or site admin for groups.drupal.org then feel free to ignore this post.
handling support influx idea- live text searching? à la zemanta?
just had a mini brain wave... maybe someone already thought of this.
you know how there's the live preview below? and you know how zemanta's firefox extension searches your post as your typing to suggest links?
what if the group text field submission conducted a live search of relevant content from the group you're posting in, to see if someone had already asked similar questions? wouldn't that be smart?

Book Review: Learning Drupal 6 Module Development (published by Packt Publishing)

My book review pasted from Amazon.com. I reviewed the book for the publisher but that never guarantees a good review, so read on.
I must say I was asked to review this book, and I was very excited to do so. I thought it'd be good to comment on areas for people who aren't familiar with Drupal on a daily basis yet, and to give you some background, I was very excited to read this book. I needed a book that had the words "Drupal 6" and "module development" in it and luckily this book was titled exactly that and delivered. So, to newbies and non-newbies I offer the following review.
If you're impatient and don't want to read this review all the way, then just know this book must be read by each programmer who will be tinkering with Drupal, so yes, I recommend it. This book is not for people learning how to use modules, this is for people who plan to code and build their own modules. This book is not large, has great learning material, and brings tons of info down from Drupal's web site documentation into stress-free chapters. One entire chapter (Ch. 2) covers how to do an entire module from scratch and following chapters show how expand that module and build, and build, and really get to know important APIs that come with Drupal core.
In all honestly, I'm jealous that most new users get to read something as collected as this to learn from. If you read this book you'll basically catch up with content I took months, if not over a year to explore and read online. I had also held off heavy Drupal 6 development for myself until a book like this came out, so we're in the same boat.
Organic Groups OG with Categories + News + Taxonomy Problems
Hello,
I'm trying Configuring the following scenario.
My website has many groups. Each group has the same content (news, events and publications).
Using Og_blueprints and Og panels I can replicate the configuration of each new group. When I create a new group I have all views.
Segregate groups from main drupal site
1.I am trying to segregate og groups from the main drupal site. I have too many blocks on our main site that interfere with og. I have tried page specific visibility settings for blocks, works ok but for 60+ groups it is difficult.
I have also tried disabling "Show blocks" settings, works fine for og_panels pages but the blocks for the main site reappear when creating/editing group specific content.
Is there an easier way to segregate og from the rest of my drupal site without using a different database or subdomain.
DrupalCampLA 2008 registration and sponsorships now open

Problem with Categories on Node in multiple groups
I don't know if this is configuration issue, or a limitation of Panels2, but here on g.d.o, if you
1) Have two groups, each with different vocabularies.
2) create a node in Group X, you see the categories options associated with that group, and can happily set them.
3) Use the checkboxes to assign the node to Group Y.
4) Browse over to Group Y, and edit that content.
5) Now you set the category options associated with Group Y (which is fine), and resubmit the node.
ChipIn started for signup.module D6 porting and other improvements
FYI: I started a ChipIn to raise money to improve the Signup module and port it to D6. The development goals that will be accomplished if we raise the money are: a) drive the CCK integration patch home, b) do everything else needed for a 5.x-2.5 release, and c) port to D6.
Edit Link for Wiki Pages
I'm building a community site for the Public Librarians and I was wondering how on Wiki Pages, the Edit link is added on Drupal Groups.
It's the link just under the Title that says, "You are viewing a wiki page. You are welcome..." Then depending on whether you're already a member of the Group, the link either goes to edit the page or join the group.
How nice.
Does anyone know how this was done? Is it something added to the theme template? I'm trying to figure out how it's done!
Any help would be appreciated.
Configuring the OG Group Homepage and Tabs
My goal is to create a simple group with a default homepage tab.
My problem is that an anonymous user sees the following tabs when they click on the group:
View, Home, Events, Officers
I have figured out how to make Home the default tab, but I can't make the view tab disappear for anonymous user. When the anonymous user clicks on the group title from the groups directory I would like them to see the tabs:
Home (selected), Events, Officers
(I'm not clear on the reason that the View tab exists, but I think that it is always supposed to show up for og administrators.)
