Drupalchix
Only about 1.5% of the people involved in open source are women, leaving us terribly underrepresented. In the Drupal world, we're up to a whopping 7% 10%, which only gets us to awfully unrepresented. ;) This group is for anyone (either male or female) who believes that we can do better and wants to help.
So if you:
- are a woman who needs some help/guidance in order to get (more) involved with Drupal and the Drupal community
- are a woman who wants to network and get to know other women involved in Drupal
- are anyone who has ideas on things we can do to help encourage women to participate in Drupal
...then this is the group for you. :)
This group is specifically not for job postings, so please keep those off this list. Thanks.
DrupalChix Logo, shirts, etc
The results of a longggg and lively discussion are in. The logo is:

Thanks to cncoleman and heather for most of the design work, to Ariane for pushing things to a vote and tabulating the results, and to marc for getting the whole thing started.
Where in the World are the DrupalChix?
There have been a number of comments about how to find other women in Drupal. We're scattered around, but maybe not as much as we think. And it would be nice to know if there are other DrupalChix nearby. Maybe it could even lead to some regional DrupalChix get-togethers :-)
Would you be willing to present a drupalchix session at Drupal Camp L.A. ?
Drupalcon Paris and Hello to all of you :)
Hi,
I'm new in this group. Hello to all of you. I am going to Paris which will be my first Drupal Conference, so I'm so zusagen a virgin ;)
I'll find it cool to meet you there, so I'm for the proposed meeting too.
See ya

Customizing Pixture theme
I'm modifying the Pixture theme for Drupal 6. It uses tables to construct the sidebars allowing for rounded corners. I want to use the same treatment for the main content area but can't figure out how to put the content area in a similar table.
any ideas?
I've attached a picture of what it looks like currently.
DrupalCampLA 2009 drupalchix track
The LA user's group is planning the 2009 DrupalCamp, and nbluto and I are going to organize a drupalchix-themed track of some sort. We've just begun planning - and are hoping for feedback from you as to what themes/topics/discussions you would find most useful in such a track!
DrupalCon Paris meetup - let's eat cheese in the park!
Since I bought my ticket to drupalconParis this morning, I think it's safe to say I'm in for a drupalchix meetup, even though I haven't bought my airfare yet.
I will be happy to put together a meetup -- and even bring the purple/yellow/green dinosaur hat many of you will remember from drupalconDC -- so speak up if you're coming to Paris. We'll want to do it early in the convention so those of you who are new (like I was in DC!) or traveling alone (like I will be in Paris!) can find friendly faces early on.
Programming Games (for girls?)
I seem to remember a mention of games that help high school (or similar) age girls learn programming, and I've forgotten where it was. Do you all know of any fun games that teach something useful like coding or php or something similar?
Cheers!
Drupal Design Camp Boston on June 13-14, 2009
Drupal Design Camp Boston is a free, two-day Drupal conference on June 13-14, 2009, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is being organized by members of the Boston Drupal group as part of the growing Design 4 Drupal initiative that launched when designers and themers took DrupalCon DC by storm this past March.
This camp also coincides with the drupal.org redesign sprint at the MIT Media Lab on Friday, June 12. The sprint picks up where the San Francisco redesign sprint left off and participants at the Boston sprint will be learning how to contribute to theming drupal.org as well as implement the redesign.
Penguin Day SF
Penguin Day is coming to San Francisco on Saturday, April 25, 2009,
right before the NTC. We'd love to see you there!
Penguin Days are designed to let nonprofits and social justice activists
learn about free and open source software that can support their work
and potentially save them money, including tools for web publishing,
fundraising, blogging, and campaigning.
Full details are at www.penguinday.org. Thanks to the generosity of
Google, we're delighted to grant fee waivers to anyone who needs one!
Need help customizing events
I've got an events calendar that works fine, except....
I added a new field to the event content type that allows the user to specify who's heading an event via a dropdown list that is pre-populated. When the user goes to the month, week, or day view, I would like that newly added field to show up.
So right now, in calendar view I can only see the event title:
Installation in Denver
What I would like to see is the event title and who's heading it like this:
Installation in Denver
Bob
Can anyone help?
Drupal training in Australia
G'day from Em Space in Australia.
We're about to start rolling out our new Drupal training workshops in Melbourne and are not only educating developers, but also clients. While there may be the small issue of the ocean between us, don't let that stop you!
Is Drupal training something that you think may benefit your staff or clients? Or is that a silly question! If so, please feel free to pass our details on, alternatively, we'd be very grateful for an introduction to anyone you know operating Drupal in our region who's interested in learning more.
Help for a Photographer Friend (Drupal 6)
Hi all,
A friend of mine is getting into Drupal and is far more advanced than I am with customizing the system using PHP. I'd asked someone else I know with some advanced Drupal experience this question, but they weren't able to help me either, so I thought I'd post it here on his behalf.
Ladies get your talk submission in to Open Web Vancouver conference
On June 11-12th 2009, there will be a conference about Open Web technologies in Vancouver BC.
The site is absolutely gorgeous, designed by Malcolm a lady herself, yes confusing I know.
http://openwebvancouver.ca/
We would love to see the many talented ladies submit talks, talk submission deadline is April 15th.
In particular it would be lovely to have someone like webchick to give a keynote presentation.
Why use Drupal? (My video recap of DrupalCon)
Hi DrupalChix!
I just got back from my first DrupalCon, and had the BEST time!! I don't think I got to meet many of you in person, so I'm saying hi now, and will be more active here in the future :)
Here's the link to my video (less than 2 min):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHIyF-P_CqU
I'm on a drupal high after the conference, and am now trying to get new people excited about drupal too.
Hope you guys managed to avoid the drupal plague!

Perspectives on women in Drupal and open source in general
Hi Chix-
I'm working on my next post for the Girls in Tech (http://girlsintech.net) blog, and, inspired by last week's DrupalCon, conversations there (and the intro paragraph for this group!), I wanted to write something on the experiences of women in Drupal and/or open source in general.
Of course, this is the best place to look for material!
My questions for you...
- Does anyone know what % we were for this DrupalCon?
- Anyone come across any good research or commentary on this topic?
What do we want this group to be?
Something that I wanted to bring up at Drupalcon but didn't really get the chance to because of the 14,000 other things going on at Drupalcon ;) was a bit of discussion on what (if anything) we ultimately want this group to be.
Some boring back-story:
At the very first Drupalchix meetup in Barcelona in 2007, someone (Laura?) initially suggested creating this group. At the time, I was dead-set against it. I didn't want women in Drupal to be closed into a "sub" community within the larger Drupal community; I wanted us to be "out and proud" doing awesome things within the larger Drupal community, of which we are an important part. I still very strongly feel that way.
At Drupalcon Boston 2008 when this idea came up a second time, I finally caved and started this group. The idea was that women might find it easier to get involved in Drupal if they have an initial "jump-off" point where they can find other women like them, and also for us to have a "safe space" for discussing sensitive issues such as sexism or homophobia.
It's been interesting to watch how things have evolved over the past year.
Drupalcon isms
Many who know me, will know that I am hyper-sensitive about some issues. Overall drupalcon was a fantastic experience, but here are some of my minor criticisms which get under my skin.
- in Dries keynote, noting the facial beard growth as an indication of your seniority or length of time within drupal. Thanks, I guess I will always be junior because I cannot grow a beard.
Were you there? Let's do this again!
See the DrupalChix at DrupalCon DC!
Were you at the DrupalChix meetup? Tag yourself in the photo!
Want to do it again? We'll save the back corner of the lunch area for you. Come to the DrupalChix corner, make new friends, and find kindred spirits. I have to pass the dragon hat to other people for tomorrow (Thursday) because I have another BoF to attend, but feel free to organize on your own.
It was great to meet you. :)
What restaurant for our DrupalconDC meetup?
DrupalChix IRC
Hey gals -
Just wanted to put the word out that I've got a drupalchix IRC chat running on irc.freenode.net in case anyone thinks it'd be useful for staying in touch especially next week at DrupalCon, join up!
Can't wait to see you there!

Drupalchix at Twitter?
Who of you guys uses twitter? I'm connected to a bunch of the boys of Drupal, like MortenDK, Robert Douglass, Dries etc, but not that many girls (Except for http://twitter.com/webchick and a couple of others). You can find me at www.twitter.com/aschiwi.
Drupal Training in Reno
Three Days of Drupal Training in Reno Nevada!
Chris Charlton and Laura Scroggins are working together to provide two sets of Drupal training sessions.
Which BoF time slot would you like to meet up in, dearest drupalchix?
Search Terms for Rearranging Columns
I'm looking for information on how to allow users to rearrange / drag and drop / hide or show columns.
I've got cck, views, and panels loaded.
What I can do:
Provide views to users
Allow users to organize their content types into a view in the order they want
Allow users to change the titles for the content types
What I want to do:
Allow users to control which columns are seen or hidden within a view
Allow users to rearrange, move, or shuffle (what is the term) the columns
There are plenty of references for mucking around with tables and rows, leafs, etc. using weights ..
Meeting in DC?
Aside from things like a BOF, I hope to meet all of you who are coming to DrupalCon. I'm very interested in learning about the things you all are doing. My days keep me pretty focused on business and the projects we're doing, so in many ways I feel really out of touch with the great stuff happening out there. Do you Twitter? I'm http://twitter.com/lauras

Help with webform module
I'm needing some help with the webform module. It shows up fine in Firefox, but in Internet Explorer any text fields that are not required, have an extra offset on the left hand side. You can see the form at http://www.finesse.com/trudo-optical. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Women at Drupalcamp Cologne
Hi fellow Drupalchix,
I just got back from a weekend at Drupalcamp Cologne. We were about 220 people and I think I saw about 10 women, a few of which came with their husbands (but use Drupal themselves). I didn't actually talk to any of the women, there wasn't much time and I was busy getting to know everyone I already knew from #drupal.de IRC channel. So I don't really have much else to say about women at DrupalCamp, I just wanted to give you guys the info. I wonder why there are such few women using Drupal?
Oh well, for now I will invite the women who attended to this group :-)

Drupalcon DC roomies?
Anyone going to Drupalcon looking for rooms to share (or have a room to share)? I'm arriving on the 3rd, leaving on the 8th, looking for a the right mix of pretty close and reasonably priced (optimally, I'd love to manage to spend less than $60-70 per night.)
SCALE 7X Women In Open Source conference accepting proposals
If any Drupalchix are in or around the Los Angeles area, you might want to check out the So Cal Linux Expo (SCALE) Women in Open Source event. It takes place on Feb. 20th just before the full-on SCALE conference. They're accepting proposals, in case you want to speak. I went there last year and gave a crash-course on Drupal, and it was a really cool group. :) They invite women involved in open source software to talk about any number of things, from technical information to management strategies to social issues.
Maybe Drupal *is* different?
I just want to ask, are we looking at this statistic in the wrong way:
"Only about 1.5% of the people involved in open source are women, leaving us terribly underrepresented. In the Drupal world, we're up to a whopping 7% 10%, which only gets us to awfully unrepresented. ;) "
Happy Halloween Drupalchix!
DrupalCon Accommodations and Travel Planning
Hey ladies--
Just wanted somewhere to aggregate any travel planning info for DrupalCon.
Accommodations
Hello DrupalChix! I need some help!!
Hello ladies,
So glad I found you!!! I am new to this group and to Drupal. My website MomFuse.com (www.momfuse.com) is beginning to outgrow Wordpress.. I've been thinking about switching to Drupal so I'm here to learn. I know absolutely nothing about Drupal so far, well.. I do know how to install it through my Cpanel lol.
DrupalCon
I'm looking for some advice. I've been using Drupal for ~4 years now. I am only a user, I haven't taken the plunge into coding or documenting. I know that I should, I am just over-committed as it is!
My question is, as someone that just USES Drupal, is DrupalCon for me?
I'd love to hear what you think, and perhaps I'll get to meet some of you @ DrupalCon DC (my current hometown!)
Thanks!
DrupalCon in Washington DC
I just saw the announcement for DrupalCon in Washington DC. I'm stoked; it's a city I have friends in, and my employer's supportive of my asking to go. Not to mention that it's only a short plane hop away.
I'd be interested in helping put together a meetup, if there's interest.
Senior Web Developer | BlogHer
Hello Drupalchix! I work at BlogHer as a web developer and producer. We'd like to hire a senior developer who's a super Drupal guru! It's a great place to work. And I am very proud to be able to say that we won this year's Anita Borg Social Impact award.
Here's the full job description. Note that we are looking for someone who is in the San Francisco Bay Area and can work at least part of the time from our Redwood City office.
Best,

Drupal 6 Themes, beyond drupal
Hello.
I am working on a donated site in 6 and I am looking for more theme options beyond what is on the drupal.org themes page. Is there a website that you like for free drupal themes that is currently creating for 6?
Thanks!
Nicole Bluto

Drupalchix Kiva community
Ladies, here is a way to help other ladies survive and prosper in some of the poorest regions by using microfinance. Microloans allow for families (women, men, and children) to prosper, and businesses to flourish generation after generation.
Kiva.org was started by some ex-Googlers, and has so far funded 60 000 projects of approx $500 each.
Looking for advice - how to theme
I've been using Drupal for a little over a year now, and while I'm getting much better there are still times I get stumped. I'm looking for someone(s) who is willing to give me some guidance periodically on what the best way is to achieve something, but something that's not related to a particular module. Is this a good place to post this type of request?
Team leader, drupal programmer, php coding a bonus | Very large and old women's website
Full-time, work-at-home drupal progammer needed. Extensive women's site created initially in asp and mssql, now 50% completely redone in drupal but need someone to complete it. Prefer female drupalchix because website is for women. Some php coding necessary. Salary negotiable. Work-at-home mom's welcome.
Email powdersnowskier@aol.com with resume details.
cvs contrib procedure
When I gained cvs access, I read the drupal book pages on cvs and also merlinofchaos blog, and polled irc drupal-support.
What I came up with was that there are 2 ways of maintaining releases for contributed modules.
1) Always have the latest code in head, and only release a branch when the new version of drupal comes out. For example when working with module and it is for drupal5 the code is found under HEAD, when the module is upgraded for drupal6, create a branch DRUPAL-5 for the drupal5 module.
Labor Saving Modules & Tips
Hi, I find myself the proud mother of a now, one month old baby girl and a three year old, desperately short on sleep and hopelessly short on time. Last night. I found myself half asleep last night thinking of the 1950's miracle of technology - the automatic kitchen.
I've got a multi-site Drupal 5 site I've got to update to 6, and I'm looking for the microwave oven and refrigerator of the Drupal world.
What modules and or tips or tricks do you find save you time and make your life easier?
Drupal Camp LA 2008
Have decided to scoot down to Los Angeles for Drupalcampla.com, as I will be down there for the Digital Identity conference in Anaheim earlier that week.
Any other drupalchix attending / organizing drupalcamp Los Angeles?
Drupalchix; We're Now 10%!
7% no more, we've gone up to 10%!
At least at Drupalcon Szeged. I wonder what the numbers are now overall.
Drupal has been notably very gender friendly for a while and has many incredibly inspiring, amazing women that are a part of making it both a great CMS and a great community to be a part of. Drupal has always had a larger number of female contributors than most open source projects, the percentage just a piddly 2% in open source in general. We've been at 7% for a while now and it's so great to see those numbers increasing.
seeking CVS support
I have gone to meetups asking this question, asked on IRC, and tried stuff on my own, without success. Maybe Drupalchix can help.
In essence, I need to be able to routinely grep all Drupal 5 contributed modules. So, naturally, I wanted to download them all (because I haven't found another way to grep them all).
The following command unfortunately gets me a slew of things with info files containing "core = 6.x"
cvs -z6 -d:pserver:anonymous:anonymous@cvs.drupal.org:/cvs/drupal-contrib checkout -d DRUPAL-5 contributions
textaloud
Hi all,
One of our clients wish to have 'textaloud' functionality integrated into his websites.
Guys are there any open source alternatives for this?
how about building a module with such functionality?
looking forward for all your comments ....
Drupalcon Szeged Drupalchix BoF!
Drupachix BoF at Drupalcon Szgeged!
Learning from my horrible mistake at Drupalcon Boston where like half the women missed this session, this time I wanted to give any chix coming to Szeged a heads-up on when this is going to be so we don't have to resort to silly things like leaving notes in the girl's room. ;)
So, the session will be at 4pm - 4:45pm in the "Sun" BoF room, on the first day of the conference, where we can all meet each other and talk about our backgrounds, what we do with Drupal, or whatever else we feel like. This way, we can maybe skip out to dinner afterwards, and we all have seen each other the first day and will recognize each other throughout the rest of the week. Also, this was one of very few slots where there wasn't a woman presenting. :)
Hope to see you there!
Congratulations to webchick who's among the 2008 Google-O'Reilly Open Source Award Winners
I haven't come across this yet anywhere in Drupal land: http://code.google.com/opensource/osa-hall-of-fame.html
