Austin Drupal Installfest(s)

linearb - Wed, 2009-07-01 17:32

Fellow Drupalistas,

Over the last few months, over 40 people have approached me asking for assistance in installing Drupal.

I felt that an installfest would be a great way to help them get started, as well as introduce them to the local Drupal community.

Lauren Roth suggested that we actually hold several install fests -- one a month or so until the majority of the people interested can get up and running.

We have spoken with Joey and Dustin about using the ACTLAB on Wednesday July 8th, but we don't have a confirmation yet.

The red line indicates a pathway that is incomplete as of this writing.

What

It's time for another Austin Drupal Users Group Meetup! This month, Lauren Roth has invited us to join forces with the Austin Drupal Meetup Group from meetup.com and try a new venue, the UT ACT Lab.

From the meetup.com announcement:

Elegant Functionality Requires More Than Hacking Bluemarine

One of the greatest benefits of a Content Management System like Drupal, is the ability to separate the visual presentation (Theme) layer from the site logic. This is accomplished by placing your theme files in site/all/themes. The rest is up to your abilities to write & edit PHP template files, use hooks, and customize CSS for use in customizing the presentation of your site. The callbacks may seem a bit labyrinthine, but by making a sub-theme you can get well on your way.

Sound tough? It is not.

Come out next Month to learn how to get started! Lauren N. Roth will be giving short presentation to get you going and recommends bringing a Localhost installation on your own computer. Even if you are an experienced Drupal developer, write modules, and have been pimping out sites for years, let's get together, discuss best practices and demystify the design process. If you write modules, some themer needs to handle your output after they enable your module, so it would be fantastic to build a little elegance into the module itself!

Come out, ask questions, share your experiences and help others make some amazing Drupal sites!

Using CiviEvent for Events (Classes) for more than one day

Stefan Wray's picture
private
Stefan Wray - Wed, 2009-05-20 22:14

If you've used CiviCRM, particularly the CiviEvent feature, you'll know that for creating events there is a field for the Start Date and one for the End Date. This is great if your event (or class) is a one-day only event. There doesn't appear to be any provision for the same event taking place for more than 1 day, such as a class that meets from 1:00 to 4:00 PM on a Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. How have any of you who have started to use, or are considering using, CiviCRM for event registration (for classes or other purposes) dealt with this?

How are small/single-person studios doing in the Austin area?

Hi all,

I am in the Northern New Jersey area (a little ways from NYC), and am considering a relocation to Texas. I have a single-person studio doing marketing communications with a web/drupal/flash focus. For those of you in a similar business, how are things going in the Austin area? I'm trying to get a feel for what the market is like.

I've been using drupal for a couple of years, and do light to medium informational sites in drupal (communications is my thing, not application building).

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Need Help Setting Up Mail on Ubuntu Server

Stefan Wray - Wed, 2009-05-20 14:57

We could use some help to set up mail on our Ubuntu server. It's been recommended that we set up POSIX, although it's not clear that this is absolutely essential. The Ubuntu server has Drupal and CiviCRM. The main purposes for mail right now is for users getting password confirmations, for people to send us mail through the contact form, and eventually for sending users other types of notifications. We have CiviCRM but are using Constant Contact right now. We may switch to using CiviMail. So we may increase the way we use mail on the server in the future.

Two weeks ago I attended the Open Media Camp in Denver, organized by Denver Open Media. I was representing channelAustin. There are 7 community media centers / stations now part of a network that are collaborating to develop and implement open source tools. One thing we talked about was the need for open standards for video metadata. We want to work with the Open Web Foundation, and are asking them to help create a framework and process for developing open standards for video metadata. It's bit a complicated and is explained here: Open Media Metadata Standards Proposal. If anyone here in Austin is interested in this, or any other aspect of the Open Media Project, please contact me.

Our company has an overflowing pipeline of drupal work, and we're looking to hire someone with decent HTML/CSS skills who'd love to get payed learning PHP/Drupal/Javascript development. Compensation will be industry rate, not intern rates, of course.

Your responsibilities will be to:
1. Implement CSS/HTML designs, and be able to understand what part of a blog entry "$title", and "$content" might refer to.
2. Gradually learn jQuery/PHP/MySQL development so we can pay you more for your work [ or someone else can, for that matter ].
3. Have a good sense of when you should be able to answers questions yourself, and when you should ask me to help you get over a roadblock[1]. I'll work hard to make sure you are only given tasks which are within your skill set.

The "perfect candidate"[2] will:
+ Be able to look at a PNG and make HTML and CSS look like it. We will not design anything in ways that make this task difficult. Pay range is somewhere between $25-35 an hour [based on experience]. You'll almost certainly need to live in Austin, TX.

I propose the following as a starting point, if people would comment, on whether or not we should do such a thing, and if so how the structure should be.

6:30 intros
6:45- 7:45 Introduction topics (For newer members of the drupal community maybe this could be done in a series)
7:45-8:00 transitions (maybe a showcase of a site?)
8:00-8:45 Advance topic (Module work / Themeing work / advanced drupal configuration)

So. I'm just throwing this out there. Looking at the members on the Austin Drupal Users Group, both here and on LinkedIN, it is very apparent that we have quite the Drupal community. Just a simple glance shows that we have a wide range of experiences and skill levels. I think this could prove valuable to all of us, both technically, and as a means of networking. It's been a while since we have had a meet up, and I simply want to query the amount of interest there is in having another one. Perhaps then we can facilitate a more active A-DUG.

I need some help figuring out the best way to implement keyword relevance ranking in my search results set when conducting an OR search on node content. I have implemented a theme_search_form_alter to build a custom search_block_form and I have everything working with the exception of getting the results to rank properly based on keywords entered into the search_block_form.

Options for offshore Drupal development

Hi everyone,

I'm currently using an overseas Drupal dev team to help with my website development (mainly because I'm self-funded and on a shoe-string budget). The manager from this team will be in Austin on Tuesday, November 4th. I'm meeting with him for lunch, since we've never met. If folks would like to join us to learn about their offshore Drupal dev team, drop me a line. It's a great way to contract out development, especially module development.

Send me an email if you're interested: matt@door64.com.

Nice Kicks is an Austin based online magazine currently using Wordpress and have reached our limits with the platforms capabilities. We are looking for a developer who can build us a website on the Drupal platform to incorporate features listed below:

  • Blog (daily run of news)
  • Pages (more static content rarely updated)
  • Forum (for readers to interact with one another)
  • Member Profile pages (social networking similar to myspace or facebook)
  • Marketplace (where members can list items for sale)

Welcome to the Austin Drupal Users Group! Our goal is to help each other, make new friends, pass along referrals, and learn new and interesting things about Drupal that will ensure our web sites are what we want them to be. Be sure to introduce yourself to the group.

Stay tuned for Central Texas Drupal Meetups and events. Please help this group succeed by taking an active role.
