I wanted to reset this discussion on how Public Access and related media initiatives would benefit from collaboration in a wide range of areas from development, documentation, training, funding/fundraising, marketing, promotion, business, hosting, sales, and services.

Join us at the two day Google Summer of Code - Media Shiai/Sprint (Media Ninja Tournament) in Cambridge / Boston (at the Brightcove headquarters) Denver (during DrupalCamp Colorado (and the following Monday at Denver Open Media! Our goal is a Media module Alpha release!

This is is intended as a place-holder for ideas on how Drupal can help a site admin in charge of a label/artist site.

In other words, as well as offering the obvious content editing capabilities I'd like to raise the question "what can Drupal do for You?" in the context of a site admin in charge of a label/artist site.

This is just a quick "heads up" post. If you're not familiar with spotify, I recommend you try it out, if it's available where you are. It's probably the cleverest and slickest music app I've seen online since liquid audio (which became itunes music store).

Anyway..the heads up is that they've opened up to developers with a libspotify (C API package).

The presenters of this panel, including Aaron Winborn (aaron), Arthur Foelsche (arthurf), and Alex Urevick-Ackelsberg (Alex UA), will discuss the ongoing efforts of the Media Sprint by the Drupal Media working group to bring to fruition the Media module and related work.

This panel will begin with a demonstration and discussion of the current state of the ongoing development of the Media module, and a thorough examination of the concept for its extensible API. Finally, we'll discuss the near and far-term plans, including the Media Sprint planned for the next day of the Open Media Camp.

I'm the webmaster for the Miami Gay Men's Chorus and we've been using phpmyticket, a dead php project. A few people have spun this off into fusionticket. Since drupal has many more options when it comes to nodes and views and I'd really like to create something similar to the assigned seats function in drupal. I'm willing to put in the work, however I'm more of a themer and need some hand holding getting into this project. This would be a boon to many non-profit performing arts groups that have the need for assigned seating. Any suggestions and or help would be greatly appreciated!

The following modules integrate third party video with Drupal, such as YouTube or Blip.TV. Modules included may automatically parse URLs and/or embed code to determine the provider to store and display, and may or may not display thumbnails, autoplay, and other features (outlined below). Please help to make this list more accurate!

Modules for uploading and managing files, and associating them with content.

These modules actually have relatively little overlap, so you should consider this a guide in choosing the right module(s) for your needs, rather than a complaint about duplication. Just sayin'.

I have a request for a UI element if someone wants to make or find a GPL compliant icon set for the Media module. Here's the issue.

We need to have a spinner "progress" indicator (which should just be something that spins, as it's not true percentage complete, just a spinner telling us the upload is in progress). Then a checkbox or something to display when the upload is complete. Something similar to how YouTube does it. (I can attach screenshots of that if someone needs.)

I've just been comissioned to develop a discography.module for Drupal. As the name suggests, it's designed to allow site admins who manage band/artist/label sites to insert discography information into a Drupal site, without having to jump through hoops with CCK & views.

The Media Sprint 2009 Wiki has a rough outline, based on an earlier document started by arthurf, but needs some serious fleshing out. I plan to begin working in earnest again on the sprint later next week and the following (am trying to slot 3-4 solid working days towards it).

There are also several volunteers who have offered to help over the coming weeks as well. We need to try to build some organization.

Description

I have four books in my site. They are to be arranged to according to the subject of the book.

Two books belongs to Tutorial section. (That means they are tutorials)
Other two books are about Performance (This will deal with how to perform an act etc)

I want two separate blocks to view these books with heading Tutorials and Practice. Under Tutorials, two books dealing with learning will be listed and other two books will be under the heading "Practice"

I'm working on an artist's network here in Ireland. Artists blog as part of a research project looking at artists' practice. There are also site updates, news, links, etc.

One of the concerns the artists have is attribution on their posts which appear in the RSS feed.

I tried making some widgets based on the feed, and building custom RSS feeds with views.

How can I get the post author's name on the feed? Ideally, I'd like to use their profile>first_name and profile>last_name instead of the username.

I'm working on a site for a musician who wants to begin building his e-mail list. The main idea now is to start offering free downloads of a song in exchange for a working e-mail address.

I know that something like this could be done with the private module, requiring people to create an account first, be given the private access role and then directed to the URL. This is way too many steps to go through for a casual music fan (not to mention the site admin)....

I'm sure there must be some good options, and I'm open to any and all suggestions!

Was just wondering if anyone could help, am kind of lost with modules and I am about to put together a network thats for collaboration between musicians, animators, writers and artists.

has anyone built such a site, I do know how to install stuff and that but am just a bit overwhelmed with what to use, as I have a horrible habit of installing stuff when i probably shouldnt have done.

Any comments would be really appreciated or pointing me in the right direction

I've been doing some thinking about the future of the asset module. First of all, I'm completely dedicated to bringing it to Drupal 6 and beyond. What is not sure however is in which form it will move forward. With the improved hook_form and specifically with filefield and emfield tying into the youtube api, flvmediaplayer, the new media player et al, I certainly don't want to duplicate efforts. The asset module itself is quite a big project and maintaining it requires a lot of my time.

That's why I've been thinking lately of stripping the asset module down to the asset wizard: leaving the uploading of files to the *field modules (having the admin decide which modules he prefers and what type of files he needs) and managing them with the asset wizard. The asset wizard could be taken so much further if it could get all the attention it deserves. One thing I could use help on is the interface from a usability perspective: both on the asset wizard itself and on how to tie it in the different fields (filefield, emfield, ...) and editors (TinyMCE, WYSIWYG, ...). Everything is welcome: from concepts and wireframes to mock-ups and patches.

How do you want to handle the files and embedded media that have been already been imported by media mover, uploaded by filefield or integrated by emfield?

Couldn't be simpler! I see a dev release as soon as we have an icon for the play button!

Of course, playlists and the like will take more. We've talked about including several players, including a light-weight and one with all the bells & whistles, and have the module call the proper one according to passed parameters.

I just posted a sneak-peak of the upcoming Drupal Media Player!

It's still a little rough on the edges, but should be a suitable replacement for JW Flash Media Player and Wimpy when it's done (although the module will handle those as well, if someone just doesn't want the best).

As announced, we've begun the Media Code Sprint to put better media handling into Drupal core!

It's been a great time so far. In the morning, drewish compiled a file function guessing game (free beer!), and andreiashu took the bait and completed the first round with great feedback about how unusable the current state is.

Next, we've sat down and begun writing SimpleTests for the hook_file patch. This has been great fun for me personally; though drewish is an old hand at building tests, this is completely new for me. And to top it off, webchick, Queen of Drupal testing, dropped by our table and got involved!

Even the process of writing tests has been helpful; we found at least one case for validation that had been missed in the original patch, and drewish decided that file_scan_directory needed refactoring. (He's currently chasing other problems as well, and cursing about finding himself going down rabbit holes.)

The Media Code Sprint is underway! Here's a cross-post from my blog detailing the goals of this sprint, which runs through Saturday. We need your help!

Andrew Morton (drewish), Darrel O'Pry (dopry, remotely), and I are heading up a Media Code Sprint in Portland this week! Come help, in person or remotely, if you're interested in multimedia and Drupal! It has now officially started, and as I've volunteered to help keep folks updated, here goes...

First the reasons.

Number One: Better Media Handling in Core

Dries conducted a survey prior to his State of Drupal presentation at Boston Drupalcon 2008, and number one on the top ten (or 11) list of what would make THE KILLER DRUPAL 7 Release was "Better media handling".

Let me repeat that. Better media handling.

People have done really amazing stuff in contrib, but it is difficult (if not impossible in many cases) for developers to coordinate the use of files, as there is no good means for file handling in the core of Drupal. Thus, we have several dozen (or more) media modules doing some small part, or even duplicating functionality, sometimes out of necessity.

We need (better) media and file handling in Drupal core. In particular, there has been a patch for a hook_file in the queue for over a year, which has been in the Patch Spotlight (for the second time, no less) since May! (And has been RTBC several times during that process...) Come on folks.

One of the powers of Drupal is its system of hooks. We have hooks to modify nodes, to notify changes to user objects, to alter nearly any data (such as forms and menus). Noticeably absent is a consistent handling for files or any sort of notification. We need hook_file.

So goal Number One: get media handling in core. The means? Add hook_file and make files into a 1st class Drupal object. We'll be creating a test suite for functionality in the hook_file patch to validate it and "grease the wheels" to get it committed.

The other goals of this sprint pale in comparison to the first in utility, but are still highly desirable and worthwhile.

Number Two: Refactor File Functionality in Core

The guitar module reached its first stable release today.

The main reason for this release is to fix current issues, which were mainly a lack of documentation and validation, before I start working on a set of new features for the 6.2 version.

Some of the planned new features include:

• Chord fingering suggestions based on chord name.
• Validation based on chord playability.
• Intuitive input widget to keep users from having to deal with the [x,3,2,0,1,0] notation, which has confused more than one before.

The following are some key features/functionality that we'd like to integrate into a musician product or profile. We'll keep adding to/revising the list and look to identify an ideal set of modules to fit those needs.
